About Rowan Hart

Rowan Hart is a British author and writer exploring folk magic, divination, folklore and the spiritual traditions of Britain. She is the author of The Complete Guide to Candle Magic and Divination, Lost Folk Magic of Britain and Lost Goddesses of Britain.

Her interest in these subjects began long before she thought about writing books about them. Candle work, divination and spiritual practice have been part of her life for years, while a fascination with Britain's folklore gradually led her further into the old beliefs, customs and stories connected with the landscape around us.

Rowan is particularly interested in the smaller traditions that can easily disappear from history — household beliefs, protective customs, local folklore, old methods of divination and practices that were often passed between ordinary people rather than formally recorded.

That curiosity eventually became the basis for her writing.

Her approach is practical as well as historical. Rowan doesn't believe old traditions need to be frozen in the past to be respected. She enjoys researching where practices and beliefs came from, separating documented history from later folklore where possible, and then exploring what those traditions can mean to people practising today.

Candle magic remains a particular passion. Rowan's writing on candle divination explores the entire working — from choosing colours and timing a spell to observing the flame and smoke and finally reading the wax that remains.

Through her books and her articles for Divine Warrior, Rowan hopes to make these subjects accessible without stripping away the history, mystery and character that made them fascinating in the first place.
